Why an Evening Briefing Might Beat Your Morning Routine

By Feliks Gorišek, co-founder of Brifco··2 min read
Short answer

A short evening briefing tells you what tomorrow needs while you still have time to act: tomorrow's weather, your first meeting and anything to prepare tonight. Keep it to three minutes, end with something light, and skip the news if it keeps you awake.

Most advice about planning your day is about mornings. But mornings are the worst time to find out that tomorrow's 8:30 meeting needs a document you have not printed, or that it will pour when you walk the kids to school. By then there is no time left.

Why the evening works better

  • Time to act. You can still prepare the document, set out the umbrella, move the alarm.
  • Calmer mornings. The decisions are already made. The morning is just execution.
  • Better sleep for some people. A clear picture of tomorrow is easier to switch off from than a vague worry.

What an evening briefing covers

  1. Tomorrow's weather, especially at the times you will be outside.
  2. Your first commitment, its time and place, and when you need to leave.
  3. One thing to prepare tonight. Documents, a bag, a charger.
  4. Optionally, two or three light stories from topics you enjoy, like sport or culture. Not a full news cycle before bed.

What it sounds like

"Good evening, Oliver. Tomorrow will be sunny in New York, 19 degrees. You have a meeting at 8:30, so get your documents ready tonight. To finish, three stories from tech and sport."

That is an example of an evening show in Brifco. Brifco is not only for mornings: your automatic show arrives at the time and on the days you choose, and you can make a new one in the evening whenever you need it.

Brifco reads your day to you in a few minutes: calendar, weather, commute and your news. Now on the App Store.

What to leave out

  • Your inbox. Email in the evening pulls you back into work.
  • Heavy news. If difficult headlines keep you up, choose lighter topics for your evening show, or skip news entirely.
  • Anything longer than a few minutes. The goal is a clear head, not another task.

Pair it with a short morning check: see how to know your whole day in five minutes.

Frequently asked questions

What is an evening briefing?

A short summary of tomorrow, heard or read the evening before: weather, your first commitment, when to leave and anything to prepare.

Is it better to plan the night before or in the morning?

For anything that needs preparation, the night before. Use the morning only to check what changed overnight, such as traffic.

Should I read the news before bed?

Keep it light and short. If news affects your sleep, leave it for the morning or pick lighter topics.

Hear your day instead of reading it

Brifco turns your calendar, weather, commute and the news you choose into a short spoken show, ready at the time you set. It’s on the App Store now, with a 3-day free trial.
