Can You Trust AI News Summaries? 5 Rules Before You Listen

By Feliks Gorišek, co-founder of Brifco··2 min read
Short answer

AI news summaries are useful but not infallible: a 2025 study by the EBU and the BBC found at least one significant issue in 45% of AI assistants' answers about the news, often in sourcing. Use summaries that name the outlet and link the original, pick the outlets yourself, and check the original before acting on anything important.

AI is a great way to get the gist of the day's news in a few minutes. It is also a way to get the gist wrong. Here is what the research says, and how to use AI summaries without being misled.

What the research found

In October 2025, the European Broadcasting Union and the BBC published the largest study of its kind: 22 public broadcasters in 18 countries tested how ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Perplexity answer questions about the news. 45% of answers had at least one significant issue, and 31% had serious sourcing problems, such as missing or wrong attribution (AIB, Advanced Television).

The lesson is not "never use AI for news". It is that where the information comes from matters as much as how well it is summarized.

5 rules for AI news

  1. Every story needs a named source. If a summary does not tell you which outlet reported it, treat it as a rumor.
  2. Choose the outlets yourself. A summary of outlets you trust beats a summary of "the internet".
  3. Use summaries to know, not to decide. For anything you will act on (travel, money, health), open the original.
  4. Prefer summaries of today's reporting over answers from a model's memory, which can be out of date.
  5. Watch for quotes. Paraphrased or invented quotes are a common error. If a quote matters, check it.

How we handle it in Brifco

We designed Brifco around these rules. You choose topics and outlets (recommended ones are pre-selected, and you can choose from more than 90). Every story in your show names the outlet and links to the original article, so you can check anything in one tap. The text and the voice are created by AI, and we say so. For important decisions about traffic and weather, we recommend checking official sources.

Brifco reads your day to you in a few minutes: calendar, weather, commute and your news. Now on the App Store.
